The furniture comes from a commission from photographer Otto Stupakoff. He wanted a sofa for his studio to spread out like a sultan and Sergio Rodrigues responded with a sturdy, comfortable sofa that expresses Brazil in trace and identity - the sofá Mole.

The armchair is a reduction of the sofa made in 1957. In 1961 it was edited by the designer to participate in the International Furniture Competition in Cantú, Italy. There it won first place and its glory, competing among 438 models from 27 countries. The journalist Sérgio Augusto wrote, "In Poltrona Mole you don't sit, you loll". In a 1975 book, the critic and designer Clement Meadmore considered it "one of the 30 most important seats of the 20th century".

The armchair, is part of the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
