Granado
Granado — Brazil's Oldest Living Pharmacy.
Founded in 1870 in Rio de Janeiro by Portuguese pharmacist José Antonio Coxito Granado, Granado is the oldest Brazilian pharmaceutical brand still in operation today. Born from a deep curiosity about the healing power of Brazil's native plants, herbs and flowers, the brand began as an apothecary producing remedies and cosmetics made from local natural ingredients sourced from a small farm in the mountainous region of Teresópolis. The quality and innovation of its products earned Granado a rare distinction early on: the title of Official Pharmacy of the Brazilian Imperial Family.
In 1903, João Bernardo Granado created the brand's iconic Antiseptic Powder, a treatment for foot care whose formula, approved by renowned bacteriologist Oswaldo Cruz, remains unchanged to this day. The 100% vegetable-based glycerine soaps, first launched in 1916, are another emblem of the brand's commitment to natural, effective formulations. These are not products reinvented for nostalgia: they have been continuously made, trusted and used for generations.
In 1994, entrepreneur Christopher Freeman acquired Granado from the last remaining family member, leading the brand through a process of simultaneous modernisation and reconnection with its roots. In 2004, Phebo, Brazil's first luxury perfumery founded in the 1930s in the Amazon region of Belém, was incorporated into the company. Today, Granado's concept stores recreate the atmosphere of 19th century pharmacies, with original mortars, scales, packaging and exposed brick walls, a living museum that also sells.
