Shirakawa is born from the intersection of Portuguese heritage and Japanese inspiration. The brand rests on the foundations of a company with over ninety years of artisanal shoemaking expertise, a legacy of precision, technique and dedication passed down through generations. Yet its true beginning lies in a personal story.

For founder Sérgio Cunha, this inherited craft took on new meaning during a journey to Japan with his wife. While travelling, she discovered and bought a pair of shoes she deeply admired, drawn to their simplicity and quiet functionality. Back in Portugal, she realised one of the shoes had been lost along the way. Moved by that absence and by the memory tied to it, Sérgio recreated the pair for her as a gesture of care. From that moment, Shirakawa was born.

A Philosophy, Not Just a Place

Japan, and particularly the village of Shirakawa-go, revealed itself not only as a destination but as a way of living. Among silent temples, snow-covered mountains and timeless villages with their traditional gassho-zukuri houses built in harmony with nature, Sérgio encountered a sensibility shaped by restraint, respect and attention to detail. There, a daily ritual became symbolic: leaving shoes at the door and slipping into something softer to preserve the calm of the interior. Practical and quietly spiritual, the gesture expressed care for space, for objects and for the moments lived within them. That same spirit, captured in the Japanese idea of mottainai, the spirit of not wasting and valuing every resource, continues to guide everything the brand creates.

Craft and Circularity

Shirakawa merges this Japanese sensibility with Portuguese artisanal rigour. Each piece is crafted from repurposed surplus leather left over from shoemaking production, transforming what would otherwise be waste into refined new creations. In the hands of experienced artisans, these materials are given new life, carrying history, texture and meaning. The brand works in small quantities by intention, believing that less is more, an approach that reduces waste and allows every step of the process the attention it deserves.

Every Shirakawa piece is created and produced entirely in Portugal, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
